A word of caution for all applicants: don’t think that just because you have submitted your applications and written supplements it’s ok to kick back and relax! Al least, not yet.
As you already know, each College is its own universe and you have to stay alert in case an admissions officer needs to contact you regarding additional (and/or special) requirements. Here are a few steps that you can take in order to see your applications to safe harbor:
- College-specific platforms: After you pay for your application you will receive login instructions for each institution’s own applicant portal. This is of utmost importance as this is the conduit that Colleges use to let you know that you application is being reviewed. Should there be an additional requirement, this is the place where you can check for it. Watch out! Each year we have seen how the email containing the login information ends up in a student’s trash folder. If you don’t receive a message acknowledging your submittal immediately after you have paid you application fee, make sure to contact the Admissions Department and inquire about this.
- Some Colleges will require International Applicants to submit financial certifications of different sorts. Most times these original documents have to be mailed by currier in order for them to be processed in a timely manner. Watch out! December is a very busy month for financial institutions and some Colleges will ask for letters written by bank managers, so it’s better to start requesting these documents ASAP!
- Most regular decision acceptances will be announced in April. So, make it a personal ritual to login to each portal every other week to check that everything is going well with your applications. If something is missing they will probably email you, but –again- if that note accidentally ends up in the trash folder it could put your application in danger.
